TL;DR: Moving to Shopify Plus is not a replatform. Your store, theme, apps, and data all stay exactly where they are; you're changing plans and turning on features, and the switch itself takes days, not months. Upgrade when you need checkout customization, B2B, or multiple storefronts, or when your processing volume reaches the high six figures per month and the fee math flips in your favor. The real project isn't the migration. It's the storefront work that takes advantage of what Plus opens up.
Is moving to Shopify Plus actually a migration?
No. And the word does real damage. "Migration" implies moving houses: new platform, rebuilt theme, data transfers, redirect maps, months of risk. Upgrading from a standard Shopify plan to Shopify Plus is none of that. Same store, same admin, same theme, same products, same orders, same URLs, same SEO. Shopify flips your plan, and features appear.
Agencies love the scary framing because it sells six-month engagements. The honest version: the plan change is an account decision, and the technical work only exists where you choose to use the new capabilities.
When should a DTC brand upgrade to Shopify Plus?
There are exactly two good reasons: features you need now, or fee math that already works. The feature triggers:
- Checkout customization. Standard plans give you a fixed checkout. Plus opens checkout extensibility and Shopify Functions, so you can build custom discount logic, shipping rules, and upsells into the highest-intent screen you own.
- B2B or wholesale. Plus includes a native B2B suite: company profiles, price lists, net payment terms, all from the same store that runs your DTC.
- Multiple storefronts. Plus includes up to 10 stores under one contract. If international expansion or a second brand is on the roadmap, this alone can justify the fee.
- Operational ceilings. Higher API limits, unlimited staff accounts, and dedicated support matter once your integrations and team outgrow Advanced.
The fee trigger is simpler: Plus costs $2,300 per month on a 3-year term ($2,500 on 1-year) against $399 for Advanced, but it comes with lower payment processing rates. On fee math alone, the upgrade starts paying for itself when monthly processing volume reaches the high six figures. You can find your exact crossover point with our Shopify Plus break-even calculator. Below that you're buying features, not savings, which is a perfectly good reason as long as you know that's what you're doing.
What actually changes on Shopify Plus?
The changes cluster around checkout, scale, and operations. Checkout extensibility and Functions for custom logic where conversion actually happens. The B2B suite. Up to 10 expansion stores for international markets or sister brands. Roughly 10x the API capacity of Advanced for ERP and integration-heavy stacks. Unlimited staff accounts. 24/7 priority support with a dedicated contact. Reduced processing rates. Above roughly $800K in monthly GMV, pricing shifts from the flat fee to a small variable percentage, which is Shopify's way of scaling the bill with genuinely enterprise volume.
What does not change?
Everything you were afraid of losing. Your theme renders identically the day after the upgrade. Products, collections, customers, orders, discounts, gift cards: untouched. URLs and rankings: untouched, because nothing moved. Apps: almost all carry over, since Plus runs the same app ecosystem.
The one real technical task hides at checkout. If you're carrying legacy checkout customizations, they need rebuilding on the modern extensibility model and Shopify Functions. That's the only part of a Plus upgrade that resembles actual migration work, and for most brands it's measured in days.
What are the real risks of upgrading?
The risks are commercial, not technical. Buying Plus as a status symbol before the features or fee math justify it. Signing the 3-year term for the discount before validating you'll still want it in year two. And the most common one: upgrading, then changing nothing, and wondering where the growth is. Plus adds capability. A storefront that converted poorly on Advanced converts identically poorly on Plus, just with a bigger platform bill. We wrote about this pattern from the agency side in what a Shopify Plus agency actually does.
Do you need an agency to migrate to Shopify Plus?
For the plan switch itself: no. Shopify's team walks you through it, and there's nothing to build. Anyone quoting you a large "migration project" for the upgrade alone is billing you for a phone call.
For exploiting what you just paid for: that's the real engagement. Custom checkout logic, a storefront rebuilt for conversion at scale, speed engineering, B2B rollout. That's design and development work, and it's where the return on the $2,300 per month actually comes from. It's also where pricing discipline matters: see what Shopify Plus agencies cost in 2026 and our comparison of the best Shopify Plus agencies for DTC brands.
Liquid Lemon builds custom Shopify storefronts in a 30-day sprint at a fixed $9,500, and Shopify Plus builds at $12,500, the same discipline behind our Gymshark product experience rebuild, which lifted add-to-cart rate 38% on a storefront handling 8-figure peak traffic. And because speed is directly tied to conversion, performance is engineered into the build, not patched after.
