Quick answer
A custom Shopify subscription store has two separate costs that founders keep merging. Platform cost is ongoing: your Shopify plan, payment processing fees, and a subscription app (Shopify's first-party Subscriptions app is free; third-party apps typically charge a monthly fee plus a percentage of subscription revenue). Build cost is one-time: the design and development of the storefront itself. A standard 30-day custom Shopify build is $9,500, a Shopify Plus build is typically $12,500, and complex subscription logic is quoted higher.
The most expensive mistake in scoping a subscription store is treating the app fee and the build fee as the same line item. They answer different questions. One is what you pay every month to run subscriptions. The other is what you pay once to have a store worth subscribing to.
Platform cost: what you pay every month
This is the recurring side, and it's smaller and more predictable than most founders expect. It has three parts: your Shopify plan, payment processing on every order (subscription renewals included), and the subscription app that runs the selling plans and billing.
The app is where the numbers vary. Shopify's own first-party Subscriptions app is free to install, which covers standard subscribe-and-save and prepaid setups. Third-party apps that add retention tooling, bundle support, or a richer customer portal typically charge a monthly fee plus a percentage of subscription revenue, so the cost scales with the program. Confirm current pricing directly, because app fees change and the percentage is the part that adds up as you grow.
Build cost: what you pay once
This is the storefront: the design, the theme development, the subscription UX on the product page, the cart, and the customer portal experience. It's a one-time project, not a monthly fee, and it's where the actual conversion happens. A free app on a generic theme still converts like a generic theme.
Liquid Lemon prices this openly. A standard 30-day custom Shopify build is $9,500. A Shopify Plus build is typically $12,500, for larger brands with stricter requirements, more reviewers, and more complex needs. Very complex subscription work, like a build-your-own-box engine, a branded self-serve portal, or B2B and gated logic, is quoted higher and sometimes split across two months.
The two costs side by side
| Cost | Type | What it covers | Typical range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify plan | Monthly | The platform itself | Plan-dependent |
| Payment processing | Per order | Fees on every charge and renewal | Rate-dependent |
| Subscription app | Monthly + % of subscription revenue | Selling plans, billing, portal (free for Shopify's first-party app) | $0 to a monthly fee plus a revenue share |
| Storefront build | One-time | Design, theme dev, subscription UX, portal | $9,500 standard; $12,500 Plus; higher if complex |
Why the free app doesn't make the store free
To be clear, you can launch subscriptions on Shopify for very little in monthly software. The first-party app is free. What that doesn't buy you is a store designed to sell a subscription: a product page that makes the recurring offer obvious, a cart that doesn't leak, and a portal that lets customers skip and swap instead of canceling. Those are build decisions, and they're what separate a subscription line item from a subscription business.
So the honest answer to "how much does a custom Shopify subscription store cost" is two numbers, not one. A modest monthly platform cost to run it, and a one-time build starting at $9,500 to make it worth running. If you want a scoped number for your program, tell us what you're building.
